Composer - Multi-instrumentalist - Sound Engineer

When he was 19, at the end of a tumultuous season of self-development, Owen Butler drew a butterfly. It came about as he was doodling in one of his many half-completed journals. This symbol quickly became a rallying cry for his art, self-expression, and outlook on life. And it sparked a determination to share music that brings others together and gives them hope.

It’s in a similar way that Owen’s creative process works—condensing broad and difficult themes into art. He’s always grasping at difficult ideas above him, pulling them down and wrestling with them, until a song results—the duel-like dance of songwriting keeps Owen going. This multidisciplinary focus makes his music shine. His combined experience in music, film, and design have garnered attention from industry veterans, local legends, and a NATAS nomination for best short-form documentary.

Studying music and computer science in Victoria, BC, he continues to make music emphasizing emotional experimentation. Released in 2024, Rufous vs Anna’s is his first foray into electroacoustic music with an emphasis on the mix between experimental sound design and traditional symphonic style.
